String theory, QCD and black holes

String theory, QCD and black holes

I will discuss some of the ways in which string theory allows us to understand ideas, concepts and systems that are of direct relevance to the real world. In the first half of the talk I will concentrate on the relation between string theory and gauge theory, both at strong and at weak coupling. In the second part I will explain some of the new ideas about black holes that have recently emerged.
