Quantum computing relies on single elementary gates exploiting the principle of quantum superposition to run algorithms with super-polynomial accelerations compared to their classical counterparts, with potential applications in drug discovery, optimization problem solving and quantum system simulation. Physicists working at the IPhT provide theoretical tools for the development of these quantum communication and computing technologies. They are also engaged in more fundamental activities aimed at gaining a better understanding of quantum theory itself.
