The normal’ paramagnetic phase, I attempt to provide elements of an answer to this question. Within the powerful general framework of dynamical mean-field theory, a local moment approach to the PAM will be sketched. Exploitation in particular of the inherent scaling behaviour of the resultant theory enables direct comparison to experiment. This will be considered explicitly for several heavy fermion, Kondo insulating and intermediate valence materials, with some surprises (to me at least).
