The Art of Physics:Bruno Touschek and the first electron-positron collider
In 1960, the Austrian physicist Bruno Touschek (1921-1978) announced his project for the first electron-positron accelerator in Rome, the prototype of a whole new generation of magnetic accelerators. Touschek called his machine Anello di Accumulazione’ (Accumulation Ring).
The seminar will tell the remarkable life of Ada’s inventor and illustrates some results of his scientific work. Born in Wien, he went to Germany where he joined the thriving school of Sommerfeld, Heisenberg, Weisskopf and Pauli. In 1952 he moved to Italy. An eccentric, highly educated and witty man, Touschek had a penchant for art, being a gifted sketcher. As a theoretical physicist, he left an indelible mark on Italian physics.
