General relativity is currently only tested from scales of a millimetre to those of the Solar System, but it describes the forces which drive the evolution of the universe. Over the next decade we will be mapping out essentially the whole visible universe, which will give us an unprecedented opportunity to verify our understanding of gravity in this much larger domain. par In order to achieve this, we have to understand what we can learn about the universe without assuming a model for gravity, and then how to turn those measurements into statements about its physical properties rather than statements about particular models. I will discuss how to get there.
