Extreme states of matter and ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions

Collisions of large nuclei at the highest achievable energies offer the possibilities to study the densest and hottest forms of matter that can be produced in the laboratory. This talk will present selected topics in this study of dense and hot QCD matter, in the light of the ongoing experiments at the LHC.
