I will discuss the possibility of the universe being accelerated by a weakly inhomogeneous dark energy fluid. I will explain how we can use perturbation theory within this phenomenological framework to get hints about the nature of dark energy. In particular, I will focus on the sound speed of dark energy, discussing the prospects for its determination and how to include non-linear effects which will be relevant for future observations.
