Homogenization of the Schrödinger equation in a locally periodic medium

Abstract:
I will present a localization result for the Schrödinger equation in a locally periodic medium. For the time and space scaling of semi-classical analysis we consider well-prepared initial data that are concentrated near a stationary point of the energy. By the method of two-scale convergence, we show that there exists a localized solution which is asymptotically given as the product of a Bloch wave and of the solution of an homogenized Schrödinger equation with quadratic potential. In the last part of the talk I will also discuss some results, obtained by the same method, on the diffraction of Bloch wave packets in periodic media over long times.
The results have been obtained in joint work with Grégoire Allaire and Jeffrey Rauch.

Asymptotic behavior of the interior transmission eigenvalues

Abstract:
We study the transmission eigenvalues associated with a connected d-dimensional domain Ω. Such an eigenvalue λ is defined if the following problem admits a nontrivial solution (u1(x), u2(x)):
(∇ c1∇ + λ n1 ) u1=0 in Ω,
(∇ c2∇ + λ n2 ) u2=0 in Ω,
u1=u2, c1ν u1= c2ν u2 on ∂Ω.
Here the functions ci(x), ni(x) are smooth and strictly positive on W. We will discuss two questions :
1. The localization of the transmission eigenvalues
in the complex plane ;
2. The behaviour of the counting function N(r)=#{|λ|<r} when r is large. Among others, we prove that N(r)~τ rd, where τ is given explicitly in terms of the functions ci, ni.

Diffractive propagation on conic manifolds

Abstract:

I will discuss recent progress in understanding spectral and scattering theory on manifolds with
conic singularities via the analysis of solutions to the wave equation. A key new ingredient is a trace
formula obtained in recent work with Austin Ford.

On the spectral gap of a large and strongly coupled bistable particle system at low temperature

Abstract:

We are interested in this talk by the L2 spectral gap of a large system of strongly coupled particles subject to a double-well potential. This system can be seen as a spatially discrete approximation of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation on the one-dimensional torus.
We prove upper and lower bounds for the leading term of the spectral gap in the small temperature regime with uniform control in the system size, the upper bound being given by
an Eyring-Kramers-type formula. Under suitable assumptions on the growth of the system size with respect to the temperature, the asymptotic optimality of the upper bound is also established.
These results can be reformulated in terms of a semiclassical Witten Laplacian in large dimension.
This is a work in collaboration with Giacomo Di Gesù.
15h15 - 16h15 San Vũ Ngọc (Rennes) Spectral theory of confining magnetic fields via symplectic geometry

Abstract:
I will present recent results giving precise eigenvalue asymptotics for the magnetic Laplacian for large magnetic fields (semiclassical limit), in the case of a confining, non-uniform field, in dimensions 2 and 3. The essential ingredient is the symplectic geometry of the zero-energy manifold in the magnetic phase space, and the quantization of the various oscillations of the Hamiltonian flow for long times.
This is joint work with B. Helffer, Y. Kordyukov and N. Raymond.

Control of degenerate parabolic equations of hypoelliptic type

Abstract:
For evolution equations associated with hypoelliptic operators, control properties are less understood than for uniformly parabolic equations. Recent studies proved that a few results from the uniformly parabolic case still hold in hypoelliptic setting, but new behaviors also appear : a positive minimal time and/or a geometric control condition can be required for the null controllability.
This talk will present the state of the art on this topic, focusing on Grushin type operators, Heisenberg and Kolmogorov operators.
15h15 - 16h15 Rémi Carles (Montpellier) On the semiclassical limit of nonlinear quantum scattering

Abstract:
We consider the cubic Schrödinger equation with a short-range external potential, in a semi- classical scaling. We show that for fixed Planck constant, a complete scattering theory is available, showing that both the potential and the nonlinearity are asymptotically negligible for large time. Then, for data under the form of coherent state, we show that a scattering theory is also available for the approximate envelope of the propagated coherent state, which is given by a nonlinear equation. In the semi-classical limit, these two scattering operators can be compared in terms of classical scattering theory, thanks to a uniform in time error estimate. We infer a large time decoupling phenomenon in the case of finitely many initial coherent states.

Renormalization group approach to localization via adaptive feedback scaling.

Résumé:
A new variant of the scaling analysis of Anderson localization phenomena, further improving the Germinet-Klein bootstrap Multi-Scale Analysis, will be described. It applies to a large class of finite-difference and differential random operators, including some deterministic (e.g., quasiperiodic) and multi-particle random Hamiltonians, possibly featuring infinite-range correlations, and results in a unified proof of asymptotically exponential decay of eigenfunction correlators.

Exponential decay of correlations for Sinai billiard flows.

Abstract:
While billiard maps for large classes of dispersing billiards are known to enjoy exponential decay of correlations, the corresponding flows have so far resisted such analysis. We describe recent results, based on the construction of function spaces on which the associated transfer operator has good spectral properties, which provide a description of the spectrum of the generator of the semi-group. This construction, together with a Dolgopyat-type cancellation
argument to eliminate certain eigenvalues, proves that the generator has a spectral gap and that the Sinai billiard flow with finite horizon has exponential decay of correlations.

Theta functions and minimization of interaction energies.

Abstract:
The goal of this talk is to explain how to minimize a finite lattice energy of the type Ef(L) = ∑ p∈L-0 f(|p|2), among Bravais lattices L⊂R2. Our method uses a two-dimensional theta function associated with
L.
We will show the optimality of the triangular lattice :
1) at any fixed density, if the potential f is completely monotonic ;
2) at fixed high density, for a large class of potentials ;
3) among all Bravais lattices, without density constraint, for some potentials f with a well.
Moreover, we will give some results of non-optimality of the triangular lattice at low density, and some numerical results, if f is the classical Lennard-Jones potential.

Black hole quasinormal modes and resonances.

Abstract:
Many types of black hole respond to linear perturbations by ringing like a bell. The associated characteristic frequencies (known as quasinormal frequencies) are complex, representing behaviour that is both oscillatory and decaying. I will present recent work examining the related spectral problem for a large class of black holes. I will also connect these results to related problems in scattering on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.

Construction of invisible defects in acoustic waveguides.

In this talk, we consider a time harmonic acoustic problem in a locally perturbed waveguide. We are interested in a situation where an observer generates incident propagative waves from -∞ and measures the resulting scattered field at
-∞ and/or +∞. We explain how to construct perturbations of the waveguide such that the scattered field is exponentially
decaying at
-∞ and/or at +, so that in practice, these defects are invisible to the observer.

Phase segregation for binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein Condensates.

Abstract:

In this talk I will discuss the (asymptotic) shape of the minimizers of a Gross-Pitaievskii functional describing Bose-Einstein condensates with two components. We will be interested in the regime of strong segregation where the two components do not overlap. I will show that for different repulsion parameters, these minimizers are sometimes radially symmetric and sometimes not.

Abstract:

Uniform resolvent estimates for Schrödinger operators with singular potentials and their applications.

Abstract:
I will discuss recent results on several resolvent estimates, including uniform Sobolev inequalities of Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge type, for the Schrödinger operator with singular potentials. The inverse square potential, which is strictly bounded from below by the Hardy potential, is a typical example. Key ingredients are a simple perturbation method based on an iterated resolvent identity and a weighted resolvent estimate with a homogeneous weight. I will also discuss some applications to Keller-Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for individual eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator with complex valued potentials, local smoothing and Strichartz estimates for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.
This is joint work with Jean-Marc Bouclet (Toulouse).

Topological resonances on quantum graphs.

Abstract:
We consider metric graphs which consist of a finite graph with half-infinite leads attached to some of the vertices. To this graph is associated a Laplacian using the Kirchhoff boundary conditions. We describe some asymptotic properties of the resonances close to the real axis.
This is a joint work with Y. Colin de Verdière.
