Gaussian thermostats allowed in the 80's the emergence of new ideas and results in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and later the derivation of a few parameterless predictions, but they are often considered artificial and unphysical: nevertheless their equivalence to frictionless thermostats in the sense of Feynman-Vernon can be shown to hold in the thermodynamic limit.
